What is Data Security?

Data Security in a contact centre refers to the technical and organisational measures put in place to protect sensitive customer information from unauthorised access, breaches, or misuse. While data privacy compliance ensures that businesses lawfully collect and manage data, data security is specifically concerned with protecting that data once it’s collected. This includes encryption, firewalls, access control, and multi-factor authentication, all of which help prevent unauthorised access or cyberattacks.

 

Data security practices aim to defend against both internal and external threats, ensuring that sensitive customer information remains secure throughout its lifecycle. Contact centres are responsible for protecting personal data, including financial and contact information, from breaches, leaks, or accidental loss. Data security measures must also comply with laws such as the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme, ensuring that in the event of a breach, affected individuals and the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) are notified.
